Lee was born in Manchuria, China, in 1936. After World War II, his family relocated to Korea, where he began training in martial arts in 1953.
In 1956, he entered the Korean Army and served as a trainer for special forces. After completing his service, he opened a taekwondo school at Osan Air Force Base. While teaching there, he met American serviceman Richard Reed, whom he trained.
In 1962, Lee moved to the United States at Reed’s invitation and began teaching taekwondo in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1969, he founded the American Taekwondo Association (ATA), which expanded through schools across the country. He became a U.S. citizen in 1973.
In 1983, Lee introduced the Songahm system of taekwondo, emphasizing structured curriculum, athletic technique, and character development. He continued refining the system throughout his career.
Lee was recognized with the rank of 9th Degree Black Belt in 1990 and later awarded the title of Grand Master. In 2003, he was elevated to 10th Degree Black Belt and designated Eternal Grand Master within the Songahm system.
